Applications are open for IMPA's first undergraduate course.
The Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) has opened applications for IMPA Tech, its first undergraduate course. The Bachelor's degree in Mathematics of Technology and Innovation will begin in 2024 at Porto Maravalley, a technology hub developed by the Rio de Janeiro City Hall in the city's port area. Tuition at IMPA Tech will be free, and students will have housing and financial support. The program will last four years, with a basic cycle, after which students can choose between specializations in Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, or Physics.
According to IMPA's Director-General, Marcelo Viana, the new course will equip students to effectively enter the technology and innovation market, working in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data, and others. "We are well aware of the potential of mathematical knowledge to contribute to development and wealth creation. The creation of IMPA Tech is yet another large-scale initiative by IMPA to put this knowledge at the service of Brazilian society," emphasizes Viana.
The course's location is also strategic. Porto Maravalley will house, in addition to IMPA Tech, startups and technology companies, creating an environment of innovation and collaboration.
Selection Process
For 2024, the selection process will use students' performance in knowledge olympiads and the ENEM (National High School Exam). Up to 80 places will be offered to medal-winning students at level 3 (national award) of the OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools), promoted by IMPA; level 3 of the OBM (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad); modalities A or B of the OBQ (Brazilian Chemistry Olympiad); levels 2 or 3 of the OBF (Brazilian Physics Olympiad); and the programming modality at levels 1 or 2 (High School) of the OBI (Brazilian Informatics Olympiad). According to the announcement, each medal will guarantee a different score in the IMPA Tech selection process.
An additional 20 places will be available for candidates with the best performance in Mathematics on the ENEM (National High School Exam). The selection process will also include group activities and individual (online) interviews. IMPA Tech will have places open to general competition and will also reserve a number of places for candidates distributed in different quota groups, as detailed in the announcement.
IMPA Tech is a higher education course funded by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and the Ministry of Education (MEC). The undergraduate program is partnered with the City Hall of Rio de Janeiro, which is responsible for Porto Maravalley.
