AMS Notices journal publishes article by IMPA researcher.

IMPA researcher Gustavo Moreira, known as Gugu, and the research director of the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique ( CNRS), Carlos Matheus, will have an article published in the September issue of the American Mathematical Society's Notices journal. The pair thus repeat their collaboration from previous works, producing the text "Diophantine Approximation, Lagrange and Markov Spectra, and Dynamical Cantor Sets".

The article presents the results of research conducted by the authors on advancements in the field of Diophantine Approximations. One of these investigations focused on Markov and Lagrange spectra, a classic topic in Number Theory related to Dynamical Systems. The subject deals with classic questions related to the best rational approximations of real numbers. Starting from simple and fundamental problems, the researchers naturally arrived at more sophisticated topics in Dynamical Systems and Fractal Geometry.

Gustavo Moreira has been at IMPA since 1997 and, for the past nine years, has been responsible for the Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad (OBM). His main research area in Mathematics is Dynamical Systems. He received the Erdös Prize in 2018 for his contribution to Olympic mathematics, and presented a plenary lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in the same year.

Researcher Carlos Matheus completed his master's and doctoral degrees at IMPA under the supervision of the institute's current director-general, Marcelo Viana. Currently, Matheus is the research director at CNRS, which is affiliated with the Centre de Mathématiques Laurent Schwartz (École Polytechnique) in France . His research area is also Dynamical Systems.

Gugu emphasized that the two researchers have already been working on the topic and highlighted the importance of this publication. “I already had a good number of articles with Matheus on the subject. Now, we've produced this one, which is a survey on recent advances in the field. With publication in a widely circulated international journal, we can discuss our research activity with a very broad audience,” he pointed out.
