A Book Published by IMPA Press Wins the Jabuti Academic Award

The book *Theory of Combinatorial Games in Graphs*, published by IMPA Press, won the Jabuti Academic Award in the Mathematics, Probability, and Statistics category. The ceremony for the Tuesdays edition of the awards was held this Tuesday (11) in São Paulo. IMPA researcher Carolina Araujo, representing the publisher, and Samuel Araújo, one of the book’s authors, received the trophies.

“The Jabuti Academic Award recognizes a work that was created through the efforts of many people. This award belongs to all the authors, editors, and partners who dedicated themselves to transforming scientific rigor into a work of significance for the country,” said Samuel, who co-authored the work with researchers Nicolas A. Martins, Nicolas Nisse, and Rudini M. Sampaio.

The book grew out of the mini-course of the same name presented at the 3Thursdays Brazilian Mathematics Colloquium, held at IMPA in July 2025. It was the most popular introductory course at that year’s event, attracting the largest number of participants. The experience gave rise to a resource that organizes the main fundamentals of the field and its applications, making it a leading reference in Portuguese on the subject.

“It is a great joy for the IMPA Press to publish the book Theory of Combinatorial Games in Graphs awarded in this edition of the Jabuti Academic Prize. “We congratulate the authors on their exceptional work, which will certainly continue to inspire and educate new generations of mathematicians. It is a source of immense pride for IMPA and its publishing house to have them as collaborators in our mission to build a national body of literature of excellence in mathematics and its applications,” Carolina celebrated.

According to the researcher, the book also reflects the publisher’s role in producing and disseminating materials focused on mathematics education. Among the publisher’s collections is the Brazilian Mathematics Colloquia, linked to one of IMPA’s traditional activities. The courses offered during the Colloquium—whether introductory or advanced—are accompanied by textbooks produced by the publisher and made available free of charge to the community. *Theory of Combinatorial Games in Graphs* was one of these textbooks in the 2025 edition.

“The IMPA Publishing House fulfills an important mission of the Institute: to promote the transfer and sharing of mathematical knowledge,” Carolina explained.

Samuel highlighted the challenges of conducting scientific research in Brazil and the importance of having that work recognized.

“Producing knowledge in Brazil requires daily perseverance. Winning this award is a recognition of the efforts of everyone involved, and it strengthens our determination to continue conducting research and contributing to science,” he said.

Established in 2024 by the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL), with the support of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) and the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC), the Jabuti Academic Award aims to recognize and promote academic, scientific, technical, professional, and educational books produced in Brazil. Starting with this edition, the initiative also has the support of Fapesp (São Paulo State Research Support Foundation).

Now in its third edition, the award reaffirms the importance of academic and scientific publications for advancing knowledge, improving professional practices, and fostering innovation in the country.

Before reaching the finals of the Jabuti Acadêmico and winning first place, the book *Theory of Combinatorial Games in Graphs* had already been honored with the Elon Lages Lima Award, which recognizes Brazilian scholarly publications in mathematics and its applications.
