For the first time at IMPA, renowned researcher Gigliola Staffilani, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is one of the prominent names at the 35th Brazilian Mathematics Colloquium , which takes place between July 27th and August 1st at the institute. An international reference in dispersive nonlinear partial differential equations — an essential area for modeling physical phenomena — Gigliola described her attendance at the event as a “fantastic” opportunity.

“I was pleased to learn that a list of renowned mathematicians has been participating in the Colloquium for years. I realized that it is not just a conference for specialists; it is organized in such a way that the new generation of mathematicians can benefit enormously from participating,” she highlighted. “I am really looking forward to seeing colleagues who are already friends and meeting researchers whose work I have been following for some time.”

Also recognized for her commitment to training young scientists, Gigliola sees her participation as a chance to contribute directly to new generations. "I hope to be able to talk with junior researchers and, hopefully, my lecture can inspire them to continue learning more mathematics," she stated.

In addition to Gigliola, other prominent names in international science are confirmed for the event, such as Svetlana Jitomirskaya (University of California, Berkeley), José Seade (National Autonomous University of Mexico and member of the World Academy of Sciences – TWAS), Jelani Nelson (University of California, Berkeley and president of the Computer Science Division), and Marco Gualtieri (University of Toronto).

Held every two years since 1957, the Brazilian Mathematics Colloquium is the main scientific meeting of Brazilian mathematics and brings together researchers from different areas, levels and regions of the country. The event, which takes place in person, will feature more than 200 activities, including plenary sessions, scientific dissemination lectures, advanced and introductory courses, thematic sessions and poster sessions.
