2024 Retrospective: OBMEP reaches 99.9% of municipalities
In 2024, students from 99.9% of Brazilian municipalities participated in the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools (OBMEP). This historic milestone is complemented by another major achievement: a record number of schools administering the exam. In its 19th edition, the competition, conceived by IMPA since 2005, reached 5,564 participating cities across 56,513 public and private institutions. The largest scientific olympiad in the country involved 18.5 million students from the 6th grade of elementary school to the 3rd year of high school in 2024. With the results announced on December 20th , OBMEP will distribute 8,450 national medals: 650 gold, 1,950 silver, and 5,850 bronze, in addition to 51,000 certificates of honorable mention. The gold medalists from the Olympiad will participate in the traditional National Awards Ceremony in 2025. National Awards Ceremony of the 18th OBMEP.
Six years later, the OBMEP National Award Ceremony was held again in Rio de Janeiro, where IMPA's headquarters are located, on June 11th. The 18th OBMEP ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who celebrated the recent records of the Olympiad, with 99.9% of municipal governments participating. “We jumped from 10 million to 14 million students in the Olympiads. Then we jumped to 18 million and reached 19 million. And now we are at 18 million. What is important? 99.9% of the municipalities in this country have joined the Mathematics Olympiads, and therefore, mathematics is now present in a city of 5,000 inhabitants and in a city of 20 million inhabitants. That is success. And the success is that this year we have 56,000 schools from 99% of the municipalities. People, it's an extraordinary success,” declared the president.
