2024 Retrospective: A year marked by awards ceremonies.
In 2024, IMPA researchers were honored with several awards and distinctions. In total, seven mathematicians were recognized for their research and work in the field. In November, Henrique Bursztyn was awarded the 2026 TWAS Prize in the Mathematical Sciences category. The distinction was granted by the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World. Marcelo Viana, director-general of IMPA, assumed the Otavio Frias Filho Chair of Studies in Communication, Democracy and Diversity , created in 2021 by the Institute for Advanced Studies (IEA) of USP, in partnership with Folha de S.Paulo. In the same month, he was also honored with the 2024 Planeta Rio Prize in the scientific dissemination category .
Marcelo Campos, a researcher at IMPA who was part of the group responsible for advances in Ramsey's Theorem, was one of the winners of the 2024 CAPES Thesis Award in the area of Mathematics/Probability and Statistics. The award recognizes the best doctoral dissertations defended in Brazil. Olivier Martin was one of 20 scientists selected to have his research project funded by the Serrapilheira Institute. He was awarded for his research "How well can we model algebraic surfaces in three-dimensional space?". Also this year, IMPA researcher Luna Lomonaco was awarded by FAPERJ (Carlos Chagas Filho Foundation for Research Support of the State of Rio de Janeiro) in the 2023 Young Woman Scientist Support Program. The mathematician was awarded for her project "The Mandelbrot set and its copies". Hubert Lacoin received the UMALCA (Latin American and Caribbean Mathematical Union) Recognition Award for his results in Probability Theory and its connection to Theoretical Physics. Created in 1985, the award is granted by the City Council of Uberaba (MG), Palis's hometown. It is the most important honor granted by the municipality.
