2022 Retrospective: IMPA resumes in-person events.
After a period with in-person activities suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic, IMPA resumed congresses, conferences, and other events this year, bringing together nearly a thousand people for mathematics gatherings.
The end of the year was marked by three major conferences: IMPA's 70th anniversary; the International Conference on Dynamical Systems, which celebrated the 60th birthday of IMPA's Director-General, Marcelo Viana; and the Complex Dynamics in the Tropics Congress.

The three events brought together 411 researchers, including three Fields Medal winners : Frenchman Hugo Duminil-Copin (University of Geneva), awarded in 2022 , Russian Stanislav Smirnov (University of Geneva), laureate in 2010, and Brazilian Artur Avila (IMPA and University of Zurich), the only Latin American to receive the honor, awarded in 2014.
The trio attended the IMPA 70th Anniversary Conference, which also featured lectures by Persi Diaconis from Stanford University, as well as in-house speakers such as Alexei Mailybaev; Hubert Lacoin; Khadim War; Lucas Ambrozio; Luna Lomonaco; Paulo Orenstein; Reimundo Heluani; Robert Morris and Vinicius Ramos.
At the opening of the event in October , Viana paid tribute to the history, the achievements, and the great names of mathematicians who built the institution's prestige as a center of excellence in research and a hub for the dissemination of knowledge. He also emphasized that the institute's eyes are set on the future.
"The purpose of this celebration is much more to honor the goals of the future than the past. Working and studying at IMPA has never been so interesting, and I have no doubt that the best is yet to come."
At the International Conference on Dynamical Systems , a traditional event promoted by IMPA, the deputy director, Claudio Landim, spoke about the importance of Viana's work leading the institution.
“Marcelo created the Pi Center, which is proposing that IMPA invest in applied mathematics and make a better contribution to society. I am certain that the institute will make a great contribution to Brazil in the coming years, and this is thanks to Marcelo.”
Throughout 2022, IMPA held eight in-person and two online events that were attended by nearly 1,000 people, 405 of whom were from abroad. For 2023, at least eight events are already planned. The year will begin with the traditional Summer Program in January and February, and in July, the 34th Brazilian Mathematics Colloquium (CBM), in addition to other activities.
