2022 Retrospective: IMPA plants 5,529 seedlings on the new campus.

In 2022, IMPA planted 5,529 seedlings of native Atlantic Forest species on the land where it is building its new sustainable campus in Jardim Botânico. The institute fulfilled its compensatory measure for the project by planting species such as jequitibá, golden ipê, embaúba, pau-Brasil, among many others.

Native seedlings are important for replacing exotic species, enriching the region's forest. During the planting, Dr. Izar Aximoff, a botanist from AgroRio, highlighted the need to preserve biodiversity. “This planting is of fundamental importance because we are going to enrich the forest. This area is practically monodominant, that is, it is dominated by a single species [jackfruit tree], an exotic species. We are going to introduce almost 60 different species from the Atlantic Forest, and almost 10% of these are threatened with extinction,” he said.

Throughout the year, planting activities were carried out with groups of students, researchers, institute staff and their families, as well as representatives from the residents' association. The first of these took place on National Atlantic Forest Day , celebrated on May 27th, and was recorded on video, which is available on IMPA's YouTube channel.

New Sustainable Campus of IMPA

Founded in 1952 and located in the Botanical Garden since 1981, IMPA has expanded its achievements and student and researcher base over the years. With the consolidation of the institute as one of the largest centers of mathematics in Latin America, the expansion of teaching and research activities created the need for campus expansion.

With the donation of the land adjacent to its current headquarters, the institute chose a project entirely designed to solve environmental problems, from lighter materials with low construction impact to the rational use of water and energy efficiency management. The architectural proposal won the most important international competition for sustainable architecture projects, the 2017 Recognition Award from the Lafarge Holcim Foundation in Switzerland.
