18.1 million students take the OBMEP test this Tuesday (7)

More than 18.1 million students from all regions of the country are participating in the first phase of the 17th Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools (OBMEP) , this Tuesday (7). Held by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) , the initiative is the largest scientific competition in the country and reaches, in this edition, 99.78% of Brazilian municipalities and more than 54,000 schools.

The tests will be administered and graded by the schools, according to the instructions and answer keys prepared by IMPA. Students will have two hours and 30 minutes to complete the 20 questions on the exam, which is prepared at three levels according to the student's grade level: Level 1 (Fridays and 7th grades), Level 2 (8th and 9th grades), and Level 3 (High School).

Students with special needs have three and a half hours to complete the exam. The rules of the Olympiad are available on the website . Students who qualify in the first phase of the OBMEP will take the second phase exam, consisting of 6 essay questions, on October 8th.

The ranking is based on the highest scores in the first phase of the exam. Students are selected in descending order of score until the total number of places available for each school, by level, is filled. Educational institutions must send the answer sheets of the students who qualified for the second phase by mail, by June 20th.

The results of the qualifying round for the second stage of the competition will be released on August Mondays, and the winners will be announced on December 20th.

OBMEP awards prizes separately to students from public and private schools. Students from public schools will receive 6,500 medals (500 gold, 1,500 silver, and 4,500 bronze) and up to 46,200 Honorable Mention certificates. Students from private institutions will receive 975 medals (75 gold, 225 silver, and 675 bronze) and up to 5,700 Honorable Mention certificates.

Students awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals are invited to participate in the Junior Scientific Initiation Program (PIC Jr. ) as an incentive and to promote academic development.

About OBMEP

Created by IMPA in 2005 and held with the support of the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM), the competition is promoted with resources from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and the Ministry of Education (MEC). Aimed at students from the Fridays grade of elementary school to the Tuesdays year of high school, OBMEP contributes to stimulating the study of mathematics and identifying young talents in the discipline.

OBMEP contributes to stimulating the study of Mathematics in Brazil, identifying talented young people, and promoting social inclusion through the dissemination of knowledge. Furthermore, the Olympiad aims to contribute to improving the quality of basic education, enabling a greater number of Brazilian students to have access to quality educational materials.
