Get to know IMPA’s new sustainable campus

With infrastructure comparable to that of the world’s leading research centers, the new campus of the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) will take the institute’s ability to contribute to Brazilian society to a new level, helping to to attract the best students, professors and researchers in the world.

The institute’s activities will undergo a process of diversification, with more technical projects to be carried out. We will expand our partnerships with companies to solve concrete problems posed by the productive sector, as well as strengthening our initiatives in the area of education.

The innovative architectural project by Andrade Morettin Arquitetos won the 2017 Recognition Award from the Lafarge Holcim Foundation in Switzerland, the most important international competition for sustainable architecture projects.

The new structure will also be a landmark for the city. There will be four free-standing, narrow and parallel pavilions on the sloping ground. A bold and sustainable construction that will take up less than 4% of the area.

Located at Rua Barão de Oliveira Castro, 60, in Jardim Botânico, in the south of Rio de Janeirothe land was privately donated and is adjacent to IMPA’s current headquarters. Click here to see the map.

Always open to dialogue, IMPA presented the project to the community and made adjustments to meet neighbors’ requests. With the approvals and licenses from Rio’s City Hall, the first step will be to promote safety works on the land, such as slope containment, drainage and land stabilization, in a region that is impacted by heavy seasonal rains.

Planting of 5,529 native Atlantic Forest seedlings

IMPA anticipated compliance with the compensatory measure for the construction of the project and concluded, in July 2022, the planting of 5,529 native seedlings of the Atlantic Forest on the land. The planting work took three months. The seedlings are now monitored and constantly maintained.

With the compensation, there will be forest enrichment, due to the removal of exotic species (jackfruit trees) and the planting of various native species, which will contribute to the proliferation of the diversity of fauna and flora. In a short time, the land will have more than ten times as many native Atlantic Forest trees as before the intervention.

On National Atlantic Forest Daycelebrated on May 27, the institute promoted a symbolic action with employees, researchers, representatives of the Association of Residents Friends of the Botanical Garden (AMAJB) and their families.

Postgraduate excellence and OBMEP achievement

An institution of international excellence in research and postgraduate teaching in mathematics, IMPA has around 130 students and 50 researchers. The Institute also promotes initiatives aimed at improving basic education, such as the Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad (OBMEP), which brings together 20 million children and teenagers every year, and scientific popularization.

IMPA’s expansion is funded by the federal government through the Ministry of Education (MEC) and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and by donations from the private sector.

 

IMPA’s headquarters throughout history

When it was founded on October 15, 1952, IMPA did not have its own headquarters; it was temporarily housed in a room at the headquarters of the Brazilian Center for Physics Research (created in 1949), in Praia Vermelha, on the south side of Rio de Janeiro. In 1957, it moved to Rua São Clemente, in Botafogo, where it remained for 10 years.

The next house, from 1967 onwards, was a historic building on Rua Luiz de Camões, in the center of Rio de Janeiro, which now houses the Hélio Oiticica Cultural Center.

As IMPA developed, a larger building became essential to house students and researchers. In July 1981, IMPA’s current headquarters were inaugurated in Jardim Botânico, on Rio’s south side. 40 years later, the institute plans to expand its activities with the construction of a new campus.
