The Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) is launching the 9th edition of the IMPA Journalism Award and invites professionals from all over Brazil to submit their work. Promoted since 2018, the contest recognizes reports that address Mathematics, Science and Technology and contribute to bringing these topics closer to society.
Registration begins on May 18 and ends on June 19. Journalists with stories published between June 25, 2025 and June 19, 2026, in different formats – print, digital, television, radio or podcast – are eligible for the award.
The awards are divided into two categories: Mathematics and Science Communication, with a total of R$36,000 in prizes. In each category, R$10,000 will be awarded to first place, R$5,000 to second and R$3,000 to third, as well as honorable mentions.
In the Mathematics category, articles can be submitted on advances in research, mathematics education and technological applications based on the area, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and computer graphics. The Scientific Dissemination category includes works on different fields of science, focusing on the challenges, impacts and contributions of scientific production.
Entries will be judged on criteria such as journalistic relevance, originality, depth, clarity and quality of execution. See the full rules.
This year, the awards ceremony will take place in August at the National Mathematics Festival in Rio de Janeiro. Aimed at the general public, the event is part of IMPA’s mathematics dissemination initiatives. The program will include lectures, round tables and cultural activities that connect science, technology and creativity.
