A Moscow Mathematical Circle: Week-by-Week Problems
Authors
Description
Moscow has a rich tradition of mathematical circles, to the point that it is a model for many other mathematical circles. This book presents materials used in the annual course of a mathematical circle organized by the Faculty of Mathematics of Moscow State University. It is also used by the Moscow School Number 57, which attracts mathematicians.
Each problem set has a similar structure: it combines revisions of previous topics with the introduction of a new topic, presenting problems at increasing levels of difficulty. This well-tested method has proven its effectiveness in engaging students, as well as helping them master new subjects, based on previous knowledge. The introduction describes in detail how mathematical circles work at Moscow State University. Dorichenko describes how the initial sessions differ from the later ones, how to choose problems, and what kind of difficulties can arise in organizing a circle. The work also includes a selection of problems applied in a competition called Mathematical Labyrinth, a story based on real classes with math students and an addendum on the San Jose Mathematical Circle, which works in the Russian style.
