He was a Researcher Emeritus at the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) and a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and TWAS (Academy of Sciences for the Developing World). He was also Doctor Honoris Causa by the Federal Universities of Amazonas and Alagoas and by the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería del Perú, Professor Honoris Causa of the Federal Universities of Ceará and Bahia, the State University of Campinas, the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru and the University of Brasilia. He received the Order of Scientific Merit in the Grand Cross Class, from the Presidency of the Republic and the Anísio Teixeira Award, from the MEC.
He is the author of several books on Topology, Analysis, Algebra and Elementary Mathematics, two of which are winners of the Jabuti Award.
