IMPA places special emphasis on the Doctoral program, which aims to train researchers.
Its fundamental requirement consists of developing a thesis that constitutes a relevant contribution to the advancement of Mathematics in one of the following areas:

- Computer Graphics
- Fluid Dynamics
- Mathematical Economics
- Complex Geometry and Holomorphic Foliations
- Differential Geometry
- Symplectic Geometry
- Optimization

- Dynamic Systems and Ergodic Theory
IMPA has an Association of Postgraduate Students ( APG -IMPA), which is a student-run organization that promotes and supports actions aimed at helping everyone have a better experience at the institute. The goal is collective action seeking better study conditions, rights and opportunities, and offering support, fellowship and fun. All regularly enrolled IMPA students are members of APG -IMPA.
