General Information

General Information

Welcome to Rio de Janeiro – to the National Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA), to participate in the VII National Symposium/Scientific Initiation Conference. Below, we present some information to make your stay at IMPA as pleasant as possible.

Inform the participants of the VII National Symposium/Scientific Initiation Conference

The event activities will take place at the National Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA), between November 24th and 28th, 2014. The Institute is located in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, near the Horto Florestal. It is a center of excellence in research and postgraduate studies in Mathematics. More information about IMPA can be found on its website: https://impa.br/.

Arrival in Rio de Janeiro:

From the airport (Galeão/AC Jobim or Santos Dumont) to IMPA (Estrada Dona Castorina, 110, Jardim Botânico), we suggest taking a metered taxi from the airport exit and giving the address of your hotel or IMPA. We also suggest printing the map from the IMPA website showing its location (https://impa.br/opencms/pt/institucional/localizacao.html).

IMPA's location:

IMPA is located at Estrada Dona Castorina, 110 – Jardim Botânico. For a better view, please see the map on the IMPA website (https://impa.br/opencms/pt/institucional/localizacao.html).

Registration and Enrollment:

All participants must confirm their attendance at the Secretariat of the VII National Symposium/Scientific Initiation Conference (IMPA entrance hall) upon arrival. The Secretariat will be open on Monday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and on other days from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

Work presentations:

Papers presented at the Conference will be given orally or in poster format, according to the Scientific Committee's guidelines. Presentation guidelines for each are available on the website: https://impa.br/opencms/pt/eventos/extra/2012_jornadas/normas

Oral presentations: 16 of the approximately 80 papers at the event will be presented in 25-minute lectures, with up to five minutes for questions. It is important to ensure that your presentation does not exceed the allotted time. The presentation can be done on a blackboard or using electronic slides in .ppt (PowerPoint) or .pdf (Acrobat) format. In this case, please bring a computer (with a PC-compatible video adapter) or a USB drive with the presentation files.

Poster presentations: papers that will not be presented orally will be displayed in poster sessions. There will be seven poster sessions, each lasting one hour. Each paper will be presented in only one of these sessions, to be chosen by the event organizers.

Accommodation:

We will pay for the students' accommodation, including breakfast, with full or partial financial assistance from November 23rd to 29th, 2014. The students will stay at the Hotel Regina, in the Flamengo neighborhood, in rooms shared with other students.

Guidelines for Presentations

For Oral Presentations For Poster Presentations

Each presentation will last 25 minutes.
Aim to describe the topic of the work and the main results in a clear and accessible way, avoiding excessive detail and overly technical points.

The lectures should include:

  • identification of authors and advisors
  • Description and motivation of the topic
  • presentation of the main results
  • Conclusion and future objectives
Both overhead projectors and data projectors will be available. If you intend to use one of them, please allow for between 15 and 25 transparencies.

Give the audience time to read them!

Important: never use font sizes smaller than 20.
    Use colors judiciously!

Poster presentations should have the following characteristics:

The available area will be 1m by 1m.
The title, author(s), and advisor(s) should be indicated at the top.

Font size:

  • Title: Size 70 (1.5cm tall)
  • Authors and advisors: size 50 (1cm high)
  • Text: size 28 (0.7cm high).
Aim for a good balance between text and illustrations: illustrations should occupy a larger area.

Authors should be near the poster during presentation times and should prepare a concise oral presentation (2 to 3 minutes) of their work.

The submission of the work should be sent via email to icimpa@impa.br, containing the academic transcript and a monograph of at least 15 pages about your Scientific Initiation project. Remember to include in the body of the email the title, advisor, co-author (if any), and university.
