About the book: The history of mathematics is important content not only for mathematics teachers at all levels but also for students, especially elementary school students. In fact, according to the MAA (Mathematical Association of America), knowledge of the history of mathematics shows students that it is a human achievement, generally developed intuitively and experimentally from the need to solve problems in the most diverse areas of knowledge. However, when the history of mathematics is presented to students, it is often entirely masculinized, since, unfortunately, female mathematicians and their contributions are not mentioned. Perhaps this is one of the main reasons why girls feel discouraged from pursuing a career in mathematics: the lack of role models to identify with.
In this book, the authors highlight the feminine side of mathematics. Through a personal selection, they present, in chronological order, the lives and work of 15 female mathematicians. With this book, the authors hope to contribute to Brazilian literature that addresses the role of women in mathematics, with their challenges and achievements.

About the authors: Cecília de Souza Fernandez is a Full Professor at IME UFF. She holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Kent State University, Ohio, USA. She is co-author of the titles "Introduction to Functions of One Variable".

Ana Maria Luz Fassarella do Amaral is an Associate Professor at IME UFF. She holds a PhD in Mathematics from the National Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA). She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Rennes, France. She is the Vice-Coordinator of the "Women in Mathematics" project.
Isabela Vasconcellos Viana is a Master's student in Mathematics at PUC-Rio. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the Federal Fluminense University. She was awarded a PIBIC scholarship (valid for 2017-2018), having developed a research project in Biostatistics. She participates in the "Women in Mathematics" project.
