IMPA’s mission is to develop advanced research in pure and applied mathematics, continue academic training with postgraduate courses
and promote the dissemination of mathematics.
Throughout its 71 years of existence, IMPA – the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics – has provided invaluable services to the development of mathematics and science in Brazil. What’s more, in the course of its history, the Institute has always been able to expand its sphere of activity without ever giving up its high standards of quality.
The Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) is a teaching and research unit qualified as a Social Organization linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and the Ministry of Education (MEC).
Research partnerships with the productive sector that seek innovative solutions to real challenges
Researchers, articles and scientific productions with national and international awards
The most important Latin American center for postgraduate teaching in Mathematics
Research development is mainly in the areas of dynamic systems, probability, computer graphics, fluid dynamics, among others, and has a scientific staff of more than 40 researchers.
Research
IMPA is an internationally renowned research institution in mathematics and its applications. It plays a leading role in Brazil and Latin America due to its excellence in research and training of young scientists. The Institute’s success in carrying out this mission has made a decisive contribution to the development of mathematics throughout the country, as well as ensuring Brazil’s strong presence and renown on the world stage in the field.
The institution also carries out research through its Visgraf and Fluid laboratories and the IMPA Projects and Innovation Center, which is geared towards the productive sector.
Dissemination
The Institute develops initiatives for the dissemination and popularization of mathematics, whether through institutional and promotional events or by encouraging the dissemination of scientific culture in Brazilian society.
One of IMPA’s core activities is the dissemination of cutting-edge knowledge through the development and production of mathematical texts and videos, maintaining a video recording program for conferences, events and classes with a collection of more than 11,692 titles, and having received an award from YouTube for reaching the 100,000 subscribers mark on the “Portal da Matemática – OBMEP” channel, called “Silver Play”.
IMPA also promotes an important academic project aimed at students from public and private schools, the OBMEP, which aims to stimulate the study of mathematics and identify talents in the field.
Teaching
In 1971, IMPA became the first mathematical institution with a mandate from the Federal Education Council to award master’s and doctoral degrees, which allowed the master’s and doctoral programs to become regular. Since then, IMPA’s academic postgraduate program has always earned top marks in the evaluation of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES).
More than 1,300 master’s and doctoral degrees have been defended since then, and more than 910 masters and 560 doctors from almost all of Latin America and countries in Europe, Asia and Africa have graduated from IMPA.

History of IMPA
Created on October 15, 1952, IMPA was the first research unit of the National Research Council (CNPq), a federal funding agency founded just a year earlier. Today, it is one of the most respected institutions in Brazilian science and one of the most renowned centers for mathematical research in the world.
At the root of this success is the fact that IMPA has always been committed to the excellence of its scientific staff, using the strictest criteria when hiring its researchers, as well as when selecting its postdoctoral fellows and students. In addition, the institute has always been open to launching new initiatives and partnerships for the advancement of mathematics in Brazil and the region.
Since its inception, IMPA’s mission has been to stimulate scientific research, train new researchers and disseminate and improve mathematical culture in Brazil. These activities, linked to each other, aim to promote knowledge of mathematics, which is fundamental to the development of science and technology in general, and in turn essential for the country’s economic and social progress.
Our History
IRL2924
International Research Laboratory Jean-Christophe Yoccoz CNRS/IMPA
International Research Laboratory – IRL2924 Jean-Christophe Yoccoz CNRS/IMPA is a research unit of the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS, France), located at IMPA. It was created through an agreement signed by IMPA and CNRS in 2006, which has been regularly renewed since then. As of 2017, IRL2924 honors Jean-Christophe Yoccoz, who was a long-time visitor and friend of Brazilian mathematics.
IRL2924 allows mathematicians from the CNRS, or any French university, to visit IMPA for a period of one year and collaborate with Brazilian colleagues, with all costs covered by the CNRS and its institutions.
