Accommodation and Transportation
Cabo Frio is a small beach city about 2 hours from Rio de Janeiro. It would therefore be best to buy a flight to Rio. Talks will begin Monday morning and end Friday afternoon.
Transportation will be provided from Rio to Cabo Frio on Sunday June 2 and from Cabo Frio to Rio on Saturday June 8 (international flights usually arrive in Rio early in the morning and leave from Rio late in the evening).
All participants will stay in Hotel La Plage on the Peró beach in Cabo Frio (no reservations necessary). The hotel is charming and rustic, but not fancy. Wireless internet will be available as well as facilities for talks, including sufficient black board space and a projector for beamer talks. Fancier hotels are available as well, but not in easy walking distance to Peró beach. You can make your own reservations if you prefer.
Since it will be winter time in Brazil the temperature should be comfortable, between 15 and 25 Celsius.
For participants from the US we recommend comparing prices with BACC (http://www.bacctravel.com) which often have the cheapest fares. We obtained a grant from the National Science Foundation for travel support for participants from the US, which is primarily geared towards advanced graduate students and recent Ph.D’s.
Please register for the conference at this web site (the system requires you to register first at IMPA, which can be used for future visits at IMPA or other conferences organized by IMPA).
Transportation Information
Going to Hotel La Plage – From Rio de Janeiro to Cabo Frio
Sunday – June 2
The bus will leave from IMPA (Estrada Dona Castorina, 110 – Jardim Botânico) at 3 p.m, on June 2.The trip takes about 2-3 hours.
For check the list of bus click here (Under Construction)
Back from Cabo Frio to Rio de Janeiro
Saturday – March 8
The bus will leave from La Plage Hotel at 2 p.m, on June 8.The trip takes about 2-3 hours.
(details will be provided later).
Other option for transportation to Cabo Frio
The 1001 bus line company is another transportation option to go to Cabo Frio.
Those who can not take the transportation provided by the event should take bus a Novo Rio Station located at Av. Francisco Bicalho, nº 1 Santo Cristo in the downtown. There are many departures times available and the ticket prices may vary from R$ 51,00 to R$ 53,00.

Aim and scope
The conference “Encounters in Geometry” will take place June 3 to 7, 2013 in Cabo Frio, Brazil, a small beach town two hours from Rio de Janeiro.
During the 5 day conference we expect to have 4 talks per day (in some cases 5 if necessary), with a possible excursion during Wednesday afternoon. We will keep the number of talks to a minimum in order to have more time for personal interactions. In addition there will be a poster session where participants can present their results in order to initiate discussions.
Several major themes have been selected for the conference, including:
– Manifolds with lower curvature bounds, including non-negative and positive curvature;
– Riemannian foliations, including the orbit geometry of group actions;
– Submanifold geometry.
These and possibly other related topics will be the focus of the conference.
Partial support for local expenses will be provided by CNPq, CAPES, FAPERJ, FAPESP and IMPA, together with other Brazilian agencies.
A grant from the National Science Foundation has been approved in order to cover travel expenses for selected participants from the United States. Application for travel support should be sent to Wolfgang Ziller at wziller@math.upenn.edu. Graduate students and recent postdocs are particularly encouraged to apply. In case of graduate students, please ask your advisor for a letter of recommendation sent to above e-mail address as well.
